Charlie Em, under Garrett Gomez, won the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes on Saturday in her U.S. debut for trainer Paddy Gallagher.

Charlie Em, the 10-1 winner of the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes in her U.S. debut Saturday, will start in the $150,000 Honeymoon Handicap on June 8, co-owner Aron Wellman said.

Wellman, who operates the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners syndicate that owns Charlie Em, said the Honeymoon “makes the most sense.”

“She should move forward,” he said.

The filly’s upset win in the Senorita, by a head over 3-5 Scarlet Strike, was her first start since finishing third in a minor stakes in Hannover, Germany, last fall. The Grade 3 Senorita was run over a mile on turf and was for 3-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Charlie Em stalked pacesetter Disko Dasko and held off Scarlet Strike to score her first stakes win. “Garrett rode an unbelievable race,” Wellman said.

Charlie Em is trained by Paddy Gallagher. She joined his stable last fall after being acquired privately.

The Honeymoon is run over 1 1/8 miles on turf for 3-year-old fillies and is a key prep for the $350,000 American Oaks over 1 1/4 miles on turf July 13. Charlie Em will have familiar opponents in the Honeymoon. Scarlet Strike and Kyriaki, who was third in the Senorita, are other candidates for the Honeymoon.

Wellman won the Senorita for the second time Saturday. He was part of the partnership that owned 2007 winner Valbenny. Last year, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners finished third in the Senorita with Byrama.

“This race has been good to us,” Wellman said.
