Hollendorfer juveniles worth watching

DEL MAR, Calif. – Jerry Hollendorfer has had a terrific summer with his 2-year-olds, and still has several newcomers to unveil, including the colts Madiba and Sunbeamsfromheaven in the first race on Sunday at Del Mar.

Madiba, a $700,000 yearling purchase owned by Nat Rea’s Regis Racing, is a son of Candy Ride who Hollendorfer said will do better the farther he runs. Hollendorfer did work him sharply out of the gate in preparation for his debut, and secured the services of jockey Rafael Bejarano.

“He’s been training very well,” Hollendorfer said. “We wanted to get a race into him and get him started. He’s definitely one who’ll do better with more distance, being by Candy Ride.”

Candy Ride also is the sire of Shared Belief, whom Hollendorfer sends out later Sunday in the Pacific Classic.

Madiba was the nickname of Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, who died last December.

Sunbeamsfromheaven, Hollendorfer’s other first-time starter in race 1, is a colt by Colonel John who was purchased as a yearling for $32,000.

Later Sunday, in race 3, Hollendorfer sends out the Street Sense filly Light the City for her first start. She has been on the exact same work schedule as Madiba in recent weeks.
