Hirsch scholarship at UK

A scholarship in the name of Joe Hirsch, longtime reporter and columnist for Daily Racing Form, has been established at the University of Kentucky for students interested in pursuing careers in Thoroughbred racing journalism.

Funded by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, Keeneland, The Jockey Club, and other industry groups, the Joe Hirsch Scholarship will provide full one-year tuition for one student annually. It also includes a journalism-related internship at a Thoroughbred racing organization. Candidates must meet a minimum grade-point requirement and demonstrate financial need.

Hirsch retired in November 2003 after a 55-year career that included 49 years with Daily Racing Form. He founded the National Turf Writers' Association and was its first president. Hirsch won numerous awards in his career, including the Eclipse Award of Merit.
