Hirsch Jacobs: Mt. Carson rallies

Mt. Carson rallied four wide in the stretch to win the six-furlong $100,000 Hirsch Jacobs Stakes for 3-year-olds.

Mt. Carson won the Hirsch Jacobs by 2 1/4 lengths and was timed in 1:10.85. Gators N Bears, who briefly took the lead after coming up the rail in the stretch, finished second, and Only the Best finished third. Get Smarter, the 2-1 favorite, was sixth.

Love Sam, who ended up last, set a fast pace, going the first quarter in 22.96 seconds and the half in 45.82.

Mt. Carson paid $9 as the second choice in the eight-horse race.

Ramon Dominguez, the rider of Mt. Carson, said he was trying to keep his horse in the clear around the turn to avoid dirt clods being flung off the muddy ground by the front-runners.

Mt. Carson's trainer, Rodney Jenkins, has won 9 of 22 starts at Pimlico this meet. "Sometimes you get hot, and sometimes you can't do anything all winter," Jenkins said.

Mt. Carson will be pointed to longer races on the grass, Jenkins said.
