Highweight has a win over track

Email

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Blade Prospector, a very impressive winner over the Golden Gate Fields track last season, heads a strong field there in Friday's $100,000 Forty-Niner Handicap. The 1 1/16-mile contest over the main track drew a field of nine older handicap performers.

Blade Prospector led throughout to defeat Dixie Dot Com in the Berkeley Handicap last season and won twice during the 2000 campaign in only four starts. Thus far this season, Blade Prospector has two victories in eight starts to his credit.

Last out, Blade Prospector dueled for the lead to midstretch before tiring to finish fifth in the one-mile Skywalker. He won his previous start at Santa Anita when he went wire-to-wire in a seven-furlong allowance. Blade Prospector, the 118-pound highweight, will be spotting his eight rivals from one to five pounds Friday.

Reba's Gold and Bosque Redondo should be strong contenders for the winner's share. Reba's Gold comes off a very game effort at Santa Anita on Oct. 20. He dueled for the lead throughout that one-mile allowance and prevailed by a neck despite having his rider lose his whip at the sixteenth pole. That was the third win on the season for the Dan Hendricks-trained colt along with three seconds and two thirds in only 10 trips to the post.

Bosque Redondo finished in front of Blade Prospector last out in the Skywalker Handicap on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita. He wound up second in that mile contest behind I Love Silver. Bosque Redondo is looking for his first win of 2001 in three starts. He has two seconds to his credit and looks to be in top current form.

San Nicolas may be the top local threat for the top prize Friday. A 3-year-old son of Kentucky Derby winner Go for Gin, he returns to his home base after a successful summer in New Jersey. He captured an allowance race at Monmouth Park this summer and also proved a neck best in the $100,000 Kingland Handicap at The Meadowlands.
