High-price pinhooks dot Midlantic catalog

Following are horses to watch at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training, based on their pedigrees, past auction performances, and notable family members. Presale under-tack-show performance, conformation, physical characteristics, veterinarian records, and late pedigree updates were not taken into consideration.

Hip No. 13, b. c., Curlin—Over the Edge, by Thunder Gulch, consigned by Bobby Dodd, agent.

Grade 2-placed Top of the Mind is a full brother to this colt, and stakes-placed Stormy Holiday is a half-brother. He brought $140,000 at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale.

Hip 79, Smart Response, ch. f., Smart Strike—Salty Response, by Cozzene, consigned by Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent.

Stakes winner Salty Response is the dam of two winners from three runners and is a half-sister to multiple Grade 3 winner Salty Strike, who is by Smart Strike. This filly sold for $275,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale.

Hip No. 136, b. f., Medaglia d’Oro—Starinthemeadow, by Meadowlake, consigned by Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent.

A half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Weemissfrankie as well as Grade 2-placed Stop Smiling and stakes-placed No Wonder. She was a $310,000 purchase at last year’s Keeneland September sale and is being re-offered after bringing $450,000 at this year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream select sale of 2-year-olds in training.

Hip No. 194, dk. b. or br. c., Uncle Mo—Two Foxie, by Fair Skies, consigned by McKathan Bros, agent.

Two Foxie’s six winners from seven foals to race include Grade 3 winner Maddalena, Grade 3-placed Haley’s Lolipop, and stakes-placed Tale of the Nile. Maddalena’s offspring include Turkish champion Agresivo and Grade 2 winner Bern Identity. The colt brought $150,000 at last year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. August yearling sale.

Hip No. 355, b. c., Bernardini—Easter Bunnette, by Carson City, consigned by de Meric Sales, agent.

A half-brother to 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace and the $1.7 million yearling purchase Tizavision, and a full brother to Brabbham, who sold as a yearling for $1.2 million. The deep extended family includes champion Plugged Nickle, Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist, and Grade 1 winners Christiecat and Riskaverse. The colt was a $235,000 buyback at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

Hip No. 388, ch. c., Curlin—Franscat, by Stormin Fever, consigned by Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent.

The sale-topper from last year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale at $475,000. He is a half-brother to stakes winners Swinger’s Party and Hubba Shake and Grade 3-placed Powhatan County, while his extended page features Grade 1 winners Ogygian and Honour and Glory.

Hip No. 455, b. f., Bodemeister—Irish Cherry, by Irish Open, consigned by Paul Sharp, agent.

Irish Cherry, who sold for $2.7 million at the 2008 Keeneland January sale of horses of all ages, is the dam of Grade 1 winners Spun Sugar and Daaher, as well as stakes-placed A Cat Named Snipe and stakes producer Maraschino Red. Grade 1 winner Constellation is in the extended family.
