High Again turns things around

Email

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - High Again, no match for Christmas Kid four weeks earlier in the Davona Dale Stakes, turned the tables Saturday at Gulfstream Park, surging past that rival in the final sixteenth of a mile to register a 1 1/2-length triumph in the Grade 2 $150,000 Bonnie Miss Stakes.

Christmas Kid appeared headed for victory in the Grade 2 Bonnie Miss after readily overtaking the early pacesetter, Lisa M, midway around the second turn and edging well clear in early stretch. Jockey Cornelio Velasquez opted to bide his time aboard High Again at that point, eased her off the rail and out into what appeared the better going into the stretch, and they ran down the leader to win going away.

"I was a little concerned when the other filly blew by us at the three-eighths pole and we didn't keep stride, but my jock said he thought it was too early to go, and I guess he was right," said Bill Mott who trains High Again for the Zayat Stables LLC.

Mott said he has always had the Kentucky Oaks in mind for High Again, "but she needed to run a race like this to really start thinking seriously about it. I think she earned her way after today."

Fee Fi Fo Fum, Christmas Kid's uncoupled stablemate, finished third.

High Again ran 1 1/8 miles over a fast track in 1:50.87 and paid $8.60

Forward Gal: Forever Together stays unbeaten

Trainer Jonathan Sheppard is best known for his prowess with turf and steeplechase horses. But Sheppard showed he can also win a big one with 3-year-old fillies, sending out the undefeated Forever Together to post a two-length victory over 2-1 favorite Silver Knockers in the Grade 2 $150,000 Forward Gal Stakes.

Grade 2 winner Boca Grande finished sixth after bobbling leaving the gate.

Forever Together, a daughter of Belong to Me, was purchased by George Strawbridge's Augustin Stable for $240,000 at the 2006 March 2-year-old sales in Ocala. That made Forever Together eligible for the restricted Ocala Breeders Sale Sprint Stakes, which she won by 2 1/2 lengths last month after opening her career with a 3 1/4-length maiden win at Delaware Park in November.

In the Grade 2 Forward Gal, Forever Together stalked the early pace of Changeisgonnacome, gained command nearing the quarter pole, edged clear, and then held safe Silver Knockers in the final furlong. Silver Knockers raced well placed along the inside, had to steady briefly awaiting room near the quarter pole, eased out into the stretch, but proved no match for the winner.

Forever Together was ridden to victory by Elvis Trujillo and paid $12.20

"Mr. Strawbridge doesn't go to the 2-year-old sales very often, but he likes to keep the stable diversified a bit, and it's nice to buy something that gives the stable a little more depth," said Sheppard. "The Ocala race was a good spot because it was restricted, but it was still a step up from a maiden win, and this was another major step up for her today."
