Hidden Expression upsets Colleen

Email

Hidden Expression pulled off the upset in the $65,000 Colleen Stakes for 2-year-old fillies Saturday at Monmouth Park.

Sitting off the duel between Truth and Justice and 9-10 favorite Aegean, Hidden Expression ranged into contention with a three wide surge and pulled away to a three-length win.

"We got a nice trip in behind the two horses that were dueling for the early lead," jockey Eddie Castro said. "They went pretty quick up front for us, and when I called on her she caught up to them pretty easily. She's a very nice filly."

Hidden Expression, trained by Todd Beattie, is unbeaten in two races.

"We're real impressed with her," Beattie said. "She's still making some mistakes, just trying to figure things out, but we're excited about this filly. The Sorority is obviously the next logical spot for her."

The $100,000 Sorority on Sept. 5 is Monmouth's top event for 2-year-old fillies.

Hidden Expression ($14.60) ran the 5o1/2 furlongs in 1:04.60.

Truth and Justice held on for second with Southern Truth third.

Aegean was fourth in her first start since finishing ninth in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.

North Street was fifth followed by Stacy's Double Dee and Marquet Madness. Breezy Cafe was an early Colleen scratch.

* Atticus Kristy ($3.60) beat Cooper County by one length in the $60,000 My Frenchman Stakes at 5o1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Joe Bravo was aboard for trainer Michael Pino as Atticus Kristy, an 8-year-old gelding, got his 14th win in 62 starts. The time was 1:02.13 on the firm course.
