Hettel named Gulfstream's director of racing

Longtime racing official Bernie Hettel has been named director of racing operations at Gulfstream Park, according to the track's president and general manager, Bill Murphy. Hettel served as an association steward during the 2007 Gulfstream Park meet.

Murphy also confirmed that Dave Bailey, Gulfstream's former director of racing and racing secretary, resigned on Tuesday. Bailey had served in those roles since 2001.

Hettel, 56, served as a steward in Kentucky for 25 years before leaving the post in 2005. Before becoming the association steward at Gulfstream, Hettel had worked part time as a consultant for the track's ownership group, Magna Entertainment Corp.
