VANCOUVER, British Columbia – He’s the Reason wore down his stablemate Boundary Bay to win the $50,000 Spaghetti Mouse for 2-year-olds at Hastings on Sunday. He paid $9.00.

Breaking alertly from post position 3 in the six-furlong dash with David Lopez aboard, He’s the Reason sat just off Boundary Bay through interior splits of 23.40 and 47.29 seconds. He started to inch clear midstretch, and was all-out to edge a very stubborn Boundary Bay by a neck. European rallied from last to finish third in the five-horse field.

The final time was 1:12.90

The race was marred when the 1-2 favorite, Take the High Road, broke down behind and fell midstretch. Jockey Enrique Gonzalez wasn’t injured in the incident.

Lopez had the choice of riding the first two finishers who are trained and owned by Glen Todd. Aaron Gryder rode Boundary Bay.

“It was a hard choice,” said Lopez. “He’s the Reason has a lot of talent and is still a little green. Once I got even with Boundary Bay, I knew I had enough horse to win the race. “

Todd purchased He’s the Reason for $50,000 out of the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

The son of The Factor won his debut going 3 1/2 furlongs in a maiden special weight on June 11.
