Hermosillo named New Jersey Horse of the Year


OCEANPORT, N.J. – Hermosillo, a five-time winner last season, has been named New Jersey-bred Horse of the Year by the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey.

Owned by Kenwood Racing, Hermosillo also took home champion handicap horse honors.

Claimed for $20,000 in 2008, Hermosillo captured five races last year, including a three-race winning streak late in the Monmouth meet. It started with the Charles Hesse III Handicap and continued with a pair of allowance victories, including one over Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner Afleet Again.

Now 8, Hermosillo has earned $625,351 in his career.

The 2-year-old champions were Salad Girl (filly) and Deliburnsky.

The 3-year-old titles went to Breathoffreshheir (a repeat winner following her 2-year-old filly championship) and Freud’s Honour.

Dabnabit was the leading sprinter while General Perfect was the turf champ.

Finally, Love That Dance was the champion handicap mare.

Signa was named champion broodmare while Defrere was the state’s top stallion.
