Hendricks, trainer, injured

Trainer Dan Hendricks suffered a spinal cord injury in a motorbike accident Wednesday and was in intensive care at a Riverside County, Calif., hospital on Thursday.

There is concern that the injury could leave Hendricks, 45, with paralysis to his legs, but his wife, Samantha, said the family is optimistic that he can make a full recovery.

"We won't know the extent of the injury and the prognosis for a while," she said. "There is a chance of paralysis. We have to wait and see. If there is a paralysis, it's only lower limbs. They said he could make a full recovery."

Hendricks could be transferred to a hospital in San Diego County in coming days, Samantha Hendricks said. She's hopeful that her husband could return to the stable by the end of the Del Mar meeting, which runs from July 21 to Sept. 8.

The injury occurred while he was riding on a dirt course. Samantha Hendricks said her husband did not suffer any head or internal injuries in the accident.
