Lone Star wants to race on Saturday nights

Lone Star Park near Dallas has asked the Texas Racing Commission for a slight alternation to its race week for its Thoroughbred meet in 2012. The track has requested to race Saturday nights, with a first post of 6:35 p.m. Central.

The lone afternoon card during the track’s typical Thursday through Sunday raceweek would now be on Sundays if approvals are granted. The Saturday night request was made as part of Lone Star’s application for a 53-date Thoroughbred meet for next year, with a proposed opening of April 12. The season would close July 8. The track has also asked for a 26-date Quarter Horse meet from Sept. 14-Nov. 10.

Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, which condensed its meet in 2011, has asked for a similar schedule for 2012. The track is seeking a 31-date Thoroughbred meet from Jan. 20 to March 12, in a season that extends a week longer than last meet. The proposed calendar again includes racing on Mondays. Sam Houston has also asked for a 24-date meet for Quarter Horses, from March 22-May 13.

Retama Park near San Antonio is seeking a 45-date season that would feature 10 straight Quarter Horse dates from June 29-July 28; 12 mixed racing dates from Aug. 2-Aug. 25; and 23 straight Thoroughbred dates from Sept. 7-Oct. 27.

A public hearing on Texas race dates for 2012 will be held at Retama on Wednesday, Aug. 3. The commission is expected to consider the dates request at its next meeting.
