Heiler on right filly in Lilac

CALGARY, Alberta - Rider Stephan Heiler and his agent, John Heath, chose to ride Kaylee's Magic in Sunday's $50,000 Lilac here at Stampede Park. That was an easy call, on the basis of Kaylee's Magic's seasonal debut in the Mount Royal here May 7.

Kaylee's Magic, Alberta's 2005 horse of the year, was let go at 4.40-1 in the six-furlong Mount Royal as Hastings invader Bond Queen took all the action. But Kaylee's Magic easily disposed of Bond Queen turning for home and posted a one-length triumph over Awesome Deal.

Kaylee's Magic now stretches out to a mile, a distance at which she scored in the restricted Sturgeon River last September, and will break from post 3 as the 122-pound highweight in the field of seven 3-year-old fillies.

Awesome Deal closed strongly from well back in the Mount Royal and will appreciate the extra two furlongs on Sunday. Awesome Deal upset the one-mile Freedom of the City last October with Heiler riding, but Rickey Walcott rode her last time and retains the call from trainer Ernie Keller. Awesome Deal drew the outside post and carries 118 pounds.

She's Italian and Tartan Star are worthy of consideration in the Lilac. Ron Blinston rides She's Italian, a romping winner sprinting in her last two starts. Real Simard rides Tartan Star, an upset winner of the Filly Sales Stakes last August, handing Kaylee's Magic her first loss of the season.
