Hear the Ghost to miss Santa Anita Derby

Email

Hear the Ghost has won 2 of 3 starts and $222,400.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Hear the Ghost, the winner of the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 9, will miss Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby because of injury, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said on Thursday afternoon.

The injury was detected after Hear the Ghost trained at Betfair Hollywood Park on Thursday. Hollendorfer did not disclose the nature of the injury.

"We're not going to run him," Hollendorfer said. "We're not going to take a chance. With time, he'll come back 100 percent."

Owned by Hollendorfer and Ted Aroney's Halo Farms, Hear the Ghost was a leading contender for the Santa Anita Derby on the basis of his half-length win in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on March 9.

A gelding by Ghostzapper, Hear the Ghost has won 2 of 3 starts and $222,400.

With the absence of Hear the Ghost, Flashback, the runner-up in the San Felipe, will be an even stronger favorite in the Grade 1 race over 1 1/8 miles.

sequence went like this....horse is doing great ....santa anita announces new security measures.....trainer hollendorfer complains about new measures criticizing the fact that he was not made aware sooner....hear the ghost is scratched....you decide.

How disappointing Hear the Ghost will not be racing in the Santa Anita Derby and is off of the Triple Crown trail. He showed incredible promise. I feel very badly for Mr. Aroney. He was so excited about getting this chance at the KY Derby after missing his chance at the KY Derby several times before with other horses who had to bow out due to injuries. The best thing was done for Hear the Ghost in giving him a vacation and letting him heal completely. Hear the Ghost is super talented and he should be lighting up the race courses in 2014 at age 4. I will all miss seeing him race this year, but I definitely look forward to seeing him impress all of us all over again next year. Good luck, Hear the Ghost, you're an impressive colt! Good luck and good fortune to you as well, Mr. Aroney. You helped make the Derby chase very interesting for us this season and I loved your stories about racing.

Scratch him if you must, but not disclosing the reason sounds like the stuff they pull in the NHL -- upper body, lower body etc.. While it may be on the up and up it may be something else too. Let's have some TRANSPARANCY !

I would say in time we will hear about his injury. They probally are really bummed out and wish not to speak about it just yet. ..

Off the trail the day after the news of the 72 hour security... things that make you go hmmm...
Big Jeff More than 1 year ago
only if you are an idiot who knows nothing about racing or Jerry Hollendorfer. Find another sport. Horse racing is not for you.

Oh, so what should I do with the horses I train, have bred and currently own then, if horse racing is not for me. Hollendorfer is a well-known cheat on the backstretch, for those of you who aren't "in the know..."

Easy to spew that kind of nonsense when you don't have the guts to identify yourself "commenting"

And your name is Standi Forx?

Only if you are an idiot do you dismis the possibility.

Jeff, I'm sure it's just bad luck. But, why don't you tell the "idiots" something about horse racing and Jerry that they don't know. I'll give you a fact. Hollendorfer has more drug violations than Dutrow Jr. Start with that. Another fact. The horse has a tiny stress line and should get the time off. Why not offer something up other than calling people names.
Mr. Ed More than 1 year ago
The bad timing of this is probably nothing more than very bad luck for the horse and connections. I think we should give Hollendorfer the benefit of the doubt as we should have for O'Neil last Belmont. For the curious, Hollendorfer does have one of the highest drug violations of all trainers but he also has started more horses than most as well. He is also in the top ten though for frequency of drug violations. The horse was really moving forward and would have been an exciting part of this race and the connections have to be very disappointed. Sometimes bad things just happen at a bad time.

Coming from a low % , low profile trainer, maybe we should hear a little more from you,we are all ears listening.....

Well he doesn't say he is off the Derby trail just SA so maybe my future exactas with him could still be in play ?
Patrick De Vito More than 1 year ago
He's out. No chance for the Derby.
Lawrence Vaccarelli More than 1 year ago
tear them up tom he's off for a minimum of 90 days..per bloodhorse.
Dave More than 1 year ago
FYI.... SA is a race that's part of the derby trail. The KD is a race that's part of the triple crown trail

Sidelined/Off the trail/inactive - Ive Struck A Nerve (51), Hear The Ghost (50), Violence (30), Shanghai Bobby (24), OK...got it...Ghost is OFFICIALLY GONE. He is a gelding so he will probably be nback either late in the year or early next year much like Rattlesnake Bridge

Future Exacta"s are a worthless bet as you can see now...

dude lol check out this mornings san gabriel tribune sports page. Thats the local paper for santa anita. front page story was on the security. Jerry hollendorfer is the only trainer who had a problem with the security. lol hes pissed no cheating sir. man i like him to but seems strange.
zerosumzen More than 1 year ago
Agreed. This is somewhat fishy, especially because the nature of the injury is not disclosed. The article doesn't mention if he's off the Derby trail as well. Almost has to be, if the injury story is to take root.

This is so sad for Ghosty's career. I hope he comes back, he just seems so unique.
