Hear the Ghost to miss Santa Anita Derby
ARCADIA, Calif. - Hear the Ghost, the winner of the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 9, will miss Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby because of injury, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said on Thursday afternoon.
The injury was detected after Hear the Ghost trained at Betfair Hollywood Park on Thursday. Hollendorfer did not disclose the nature of the injury.
"We're not going to run him," Hollendorfer said. "We're not going to take a chance. With time, he'll come back 100 percent."
Owned by Hollendorfer and Ted Aroney's Halo Farms, Hear the Ghost was a leading contender for the Santa Anita Derby on the basis of his half-length win in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on March 9.
A gelding by Ghostzapper, Hear the Ghost has won 2 of 3 starts and $222,400.
With the absence of Hear the Ghost, Flashback, the runner-up in the San Felipe, will be an even stronger favorite in the Grade 1 race over 1 1/8 miles.
sequence went like this....horse is doing great ....santa anita announces new security measures.....trainer hollendorfer complains about new measures criticizing the fact that he was not made aware sooner....hear the ghost is scratched....you decide.
How disappointing Hear the Ghost will not be racing in the Santa Anita Derby and is off of the Triple Crown trail. He showed incredible promise. I feel very badly for Mr. Aroney. He was so excited about getting this chance at the KY Derby after missing his chance at the KY Derby several times before with other horses who had to bow out due to injuries. The best thing was done for Hear the Ghost in giving him a vacation and letting him heal completely. Hear the Ghost is super talented and he should be lighting up the race courses in 2014 at age 4. I will all miss seeing him race this year, but I definitely look forward to seeing him impress all of us all over again next year. Good luck, Hear the Ghost, you're an impressive colt! Good luck and good fortune to you as well, Mr. Aroney. You helped make the Derby chase very interesting for us this season and I loved your stories about racing.
Scratch him if you must, but not disclosing the reason sounds like the stuff they pull in the NHL -- upper body, lower body etc.. While it may be on the up and up it may be something else too. Let's have some TRANSPARANCY !
Lets Make It For Four Yeart Olds-Its cruel the way it is-lolk-DS
Off the trail the day after the news of the 72 hour security... things that make you go hmmm...
Well he doesn't say he is off the Derby trail just SA so maybe my future exactas with him could still be in play ?
dude lol check out this mornings san gabriel tribune sports page. Thats the local paper for santa anita. front page story was on the security. Jerry hollendorfer is the only trainer who had a problem with the security. lol hes pissed no cheating sir. man i like him to but seems strange.
This is so sad for Ghosty's career. I hope he comes back, he just seems so unique.
does anyone think this has anything to do with the 72 hour security stuff. kinda strange time for this horse to get hurt but i guess its possible
Here we go again with these fragile 3yos
