Win Me Over, Chris Emigh up, wins the $115,350 Futurity by a half-length at Hawthorne on Saturday.

Win Me Over broke from post 14, and as he leaned into the far turn of the Jim Edgar Futurity at Hawthorne he briefly fell into last place. But with help from a masterful ride by Chris Emigh, Win Me Over thundered up the rail and caught laboring favorite Humor at Last to win the $115,350 Futurity by a half-length.

Trained by Brian Williamson, Win Me Over paid $12.20 to win, running 1 1/16 miles in 1:47.10. Humor at Last held second by 3 1/2 lengths over Fear of Secrets..

Emigh's first task was getting position before the first turn, which he did by hanging a sharp left 10 strides into the race. Win Me Over had the rail, but raced in 13th place around the first turn.

Humor at Last, unbeaten in two starts, made it to the head of the field, pulling Larry Sterling to the flank of pace-setting Chateau. This was not the frozen highway the Hawthorne racing surface sometimes becomes in December, and the half-mile split, 47.30 seconds, was fast.

Sterling seemed to have Chateau measured as the huge field worked its way around the far turn, and Humor at Last, making his route debut, forged to the lead at the quarter pole. Humor at Last was edging away from the three-sixteenth pole through midstretch, and no one was coming to get him. But Win Me Over, shifted masterfully by Emigh from the three path to the fence turning for home, got a full head of steam at the sixteenth pole and nailed Humor at Last at the finish.
