Hawthorne cancels in wind

Hawthorne Race Course canceled the final seven races of its Friday card because of high winds that made racing dangerous.

The track also was pelted with snow throughout the day, and the track surface - a quagmire during racing on Thursday - remained very muddy from a melt-off and precipitation.

The early pick three paid off for two of three winners. All other multi-race wagers were canceled.

Hawthorne, which opened last Friday, lost the last three races of its Sunday card because of poor conditions. Winds in Chicago were gusting to 40 miles per hour on Friday afternoon, with the temperature about 30 degrees.
