Hawthorne, Big A, Penn all cancel cards

EmailWintry conditions halted racing at three tracks in the East and Midwest on Thursday.

The nine-race card at Aqueduct was canceled because of a mix of sleet, snow, and freezing rain. Live racing was scheduled to resume Friday. Penn National called off its Thursday-night card because of the same storm.

Hawthorne, for the second consecutive day, canceled after two races. The cause again was was a thawing racetrack that caused sloppy, potentially hazardous conditions.

Jim Miller, Hawthorne's general manager, said training had been canceled for Friday morning, but that colder weather with sub-freezing daytime highs beginning Friday could help the Hawthorne surface.
