Hastings: Miss Derek upsets in Supernaturel

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Despite being rank early and getting shuffled back going down the backstretch, Miss Derek was able to score an upset in the $50,000 Supernaturel for 3-year-old fillies. She paid $23.70 for her two- length win over Silkworm in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Miss Derek broke on top in the 10-horse field, but jockey Enrique Gonzalez did not want her setting the pace, so he wrangled her back behind Lady Henrietta and I Think So who carved out honest fractions of 23.63 seconds and 47.77. Miss Derek didn’t appear to appreciate being rated while stuck behind horses on the rail,  but despite fighting Gonzalez most of the way she still had plenty of gas in the tank when a hole opened up turning for home. Lady Henrietta held on to finish third in front of heavily favored I Think So.

“I was very concerned with how much she was fighting Enrique early, but thankfully she still had a lot left to finish the race,” trainer Craig MacPherson said.

The final time was 1:44.95.
