Hastings: Elana d'amour rolls on

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Elana d'amour ($10.50) notched her fifth stakes win at the Hastings Park meet with a 1 1/2-length win over Sweet Monarch in the Grade 3, $139,156 British Columbia Breeders' Cup Oaks.

Elana d'amour had a perfect trip under leading rider Pedro Alvarado as she stalked the quick pace set by Sunset Pass and took control midway through the stretch turn. She held a length advantage at the top of the stretch and never looked threatened as she held off a late charge from Sweet Monarch.

Elana d'amour is owned by her breeder, GaryMayo, and trained by Joe Apperloo. They are considering starting Elana D'amour in the $200,000 B.C. Derby on Sept. 21.

Odds-on favorite Lady Shari couldn't have had a worse trip as she broke in the air at the start and then was slammed into the rail nearing the five-eighths pole by Sweet Monarch, who was trying to avoid another horse. She finished fifth.
