Hastings cancels Saturday card

Not enough horses were entered to fill the three days of racing scheduled at Hastings this weekend, so the decision was made to cancel Saturday’s card. The combination of a shortage of horses and a virus going through the backstretch caused the cancellation.

A total of 69 days were originally scheduled for the meet, but so far five days have been lost, including next Friday, July 26, and Saturday, Aug. 3. The virus certainly played a big part in the cancellation of Friday, July 5, and it was a precautionary move to cancel next Friday’s card. The Aug. 3 cancellation was made to ensure a solid card on B.C. Cup Day, Aug. 5. In terms of handle and attendance, B.C. Cup Day is one of the biggest days of the year at Hastings.

Hastings management said it would attempt to make up Saturday’s lost day later in the meet.
