Hastings cancels Saturday and July 5 cards due to shortage of entries

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Due to a shortage of horses entered, Hastings canceled Saturday’s card and its card for Friday, July 5.

In agreement with representatives of the Horsemen’s Benevolent Protective Association and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, management made the decision to scrap Saturday in order to have strong cards on Sunday and Monday. Monday is the Canadian holiday of Canada Day.

“It is disappointing, but we came up short and we wanted to make sure we had enough horses for Sunday and Monday,” said Glen Todd, who is a member of the B.C. Horse Racing Industry Management Committee. “Sundays have been our biggest days, and we have four stakes scheduled for Monday. We are hoping we can run 10 races on Monday.”

Entries for Sunday and Monday will be taken Thursday. Monday’s entries won’t close until Friday morning, however.
