Harwood hopes for another exacta

AUBURN, Wash. - Trainer Doris Harwood has owned the $75,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes for the past two years, and she will try to extend her domination on Sunday when she saddles likely favorite Super Dixie and Le Weaver for the one-mile race for juvenile fillies.

Harwood ran one-two in the 2006 Shinpoch with Irene's Bonus Baby and Cascade Rose, and she repeated that feat last year with Smarty Deb and Princess Hiawatha. The trainer planned to send out only Super Dixie on Sunday, but she entered Le Weaver only moments before entries closed on Friday morning.

"I realized I couldn't keep my one-two streak alive unless I entered two fillies," she joked. "Le Weaver ran last Friday, but she is as sound as a bell and I think she'll like the mile distance. I know she can't beat Super Dixie, but she might be able to outrun a few of the others, and that's all she will need to do to earn a nice check."

Le Weaver ran second going six furlongs against $40,000 winners last Friday night. She and Super Dixie will have only four opponents in the Shinpoch: Carrie Cat, All the Rage, Cherokee Echo, and Eyes on the Prize.

Super Dixie, a homebred daughter of Dixie Union who races for Herman Sarkowsky, figures to be favored while seeking her third win from as many starts. Super Dixie won her 4 1/2-furlong debut against maiden special weight rivals by 2 1/4 lengths on May 31, then came back to win the $50,000 Angie C. Stakes on July 13 by two lengths in 1:10.60 for six furlongs. She will be ridden by Juan Gutierrez, who was up for both of her scores, and will break from post 3.

Super Dixie figures to get her sternest test from Carrie Cat, who graduated in her second start against maiden special weight company just last Saturday, when she went six furlongs in 1:09.80 to prevail by a half-length. In her debut on Aug. 9, Carrie Cat was beaten just a length by the highly regarded colt Zagreus when going 5 1/2 furlongs. Carrie Cat, a half-sister to the top sprinter Harvard Avenue by Tale of the Cat, is trained by Tom Wenzel and will break from the inside post under Seth Martinez.

Also a threat is All the Rage, a late-running daughter of Toccet from the barn of trainer Frank Lucarelli.
