Harris just misses Challenge night hat trick


ALTOONA, Iowa - Bill Harris missed sweeping the Friday's Challenge Series races at Prairie Meadows by a head. The finals of the Challenge Championships will be held Nov. 20 at the Fair Grounds.

"We were very happy, we got two more qualified for New Orleans," said Harris.

In the $45,990 John Deere Juvenile, A Plain Brown Rapper ($4.60) impressively defeated nine rivals by 2 3/4 lengths. Larry Payne got the colt out the gate well and A Plain Brown Rapper put an increasing amount of distance between himself and the field. He finished the 350 yards in a stakes record 17.526 and earned a 98 speed index.

Chicks Clever Way finished second, a neck ahead of Trickham.

Sc Captivator ($3) defeated eight rivals in the $22,275 Pfizer Starter Allowance Challenge. Again, Payne got his mount to break well and kept him straight and strong. He finished the 350 yards in 17.865, 1 1/4 lengths ahead of First Shazoom. He earned a 89 speed index for the effort.

In the $25,110 Red Cell Distance challenge at 870 yards, the first Challenge race of the night, Lefty Ray ($8.60) defeated Harris's Stone E Motion. Lefty Ray dueled with De Passem Okey to the top of stretch. Stone E Motion, favored at 3-2, tracked in third along the rail, and altered course to the outside half way through the turn. Lefty Ray prevailed by a head, holding off Stone E Motion's late effort.

Lefty Ray finished the 870 yards in 45.637 and earned a 96 speed index.

* Ru a Quick Cat ($8.80) won the $61,288 Iowa Stallion Futurity on the night's under-card. She defeated eightrivals by three-quarters of a length. She covered the 350 yards in 18.154, and earned an 81 speed index.
