Harness Night School, the racing industry’s national online fan education program dedicated to the Standardbred set, offers a fourth session this Thursday (August 9) at 7 p.m. (EDT), with a focus on “The Trainer.” Julie Miller, trainer of world champion and 2009 Older Trotting Horse of the Year Lucky Jim, and wife of top driver Andy Miller, will serve as a guest panelist. Trainers sharing their insight via video include Linda Toscano, Tony Alagna and Trond Smedshammer. Toscano became the first female trainer to win the sport's most coveted prize when Market Share captured the $1.5 million, 87th edition of the Hambletonian this past weekend. Alagna, a longtime assistant to trainer Erv Miller, now trains 85 head on his own. He is the trainer of back-to-back winners of the Woodrow Wilson for 2-year-old colt pacers, Major Bombay and Captaintreacherous. Known as the “American Viking,” Smedshammer lists the 2004 Trainer of the Year title amongst his accomplishments. The interactive chat program will be hosted by T.J. Burkett, executive editor of Hoof Beats, the official magazine of the USTA; Tom Kelley, director of publicity and handicapper for Balmoral Park and Maywood Park; and Horse Player NOW’s Joe Kristufek. Kristufek, the co-founder of the Night School program along with Horse Player NOW partner Jeremy Plonk, teams with Burkett to offer a video introduction to the Night School program. Also via video, Daily Racing Form’s Derick Giwner will provide his topical insights. 'The Trainer' intro video is available at this link. Harness Night School Session 4 study materials are available at this link. Harness Night School is FREE to all fans, and no advanced sign-up is required. A different handicapping subject will be featured weekly as well as a look at the weekend’s major harness races on the USTA’s Strategic Wagering schedule. Title sponsor for Harness Night School is the United States Trotting Association, in conjunction with presenting seasonal sponsor Daily Racing Form. Harness Night School’s supporting sponsor is Meadowlands Racetrack.
