You couldn’t find him on the qualifying past performance proofs, but one of the fastest pacers in the sport was on the track Saturday morning at the Meadowlands. Getting in a training mile prior to the qualifying session, Hurrikane Kingcole posted a 1:58 mile according to trainer John McDermott. “We trained him at the farm in 2:05 and went 1:58 here,” said McDermott, who had a brief scare at the end of the mile when the son of Cams Card Shark jumped a black object on the track and lost his gait momentarily. “He got a little cut by his quarter but it seems to be just superficial,” said McDermott. “I’ve been training him down in an open bridle and tried it here today, but I guess I’ll have to close him back up.” As a 3-year-old, Hurrikane Kingcole clocked the co-second fastest mile of 2012 when he stopped the clock in 1:47 3/5 in the Meadowlands Pace consolation last July. Described as “bigger and stronger” by McDermott, Hurrikane Kingcole is expecting to train again next week before looking to qualify around April 15. His initial 2013 stakes assignment will be the first leg of the Meadowlands Free For All Championship series on May 11. Dan Dube is expected to get the drive behind Hurrikane Kingcole to start the year. The star in the official qualifying races had to be another 4-year-old looking to put it all together this year. Hambletonian runner-up Guccio changed tactics and led at every call through fractions of 28 3/5, 57 2/5 and 1:26 before sprinting home under some urging in a sparkling 1:53 mile with trainer Jimmy Takter in the bike. The final margin of victory for was seven lengths over Arch Madness, with Helios three-quarters of a length back in third. Takter sent his other 4-year-old trotting star, Little Brown Fox, out to a 1:56 1/5 score in his first qualifier of the year. With patient handling by Yannick Gingras, Little Brown Fox sat fourth until the final turn when he was asked for speed and uncorked a sizzling 26 2/5 final quarter to catch Solvato at the wire. The Hall of Fame trainer also sent out the fastest winner of the morning, Live Entertainment (1:52 3/5), and an interesting second-year colt in Muscle Mountain, who charged home from off-the-pace while full of trot.
