Win Missy B, a three-year-old New York-bred daughter of Conway Hall, wasn’t good enough to defeat superstar Check Me Out in the $150,000 Dr. Harry M. Zweig Memorial Filly Trot at Vernon Downs Sunday afternoon, but she put up a great fight to finish second by a length and a quarter in a World Record-tying 1:51.3. Another New York-bred, Cowgirl Hall, a daughter of Cash Hall, finished strongly on the inside to grab third, just a neck behind Win Missy B. Check Me Out, co-owned and trained by Ray Schnittker and driven by Tim Tetrick, came into the Zweig with 21 victories and three seconds in 25 lifetime starts. Win Missy B, who is owned by Robert Key and trained by Charlie Norris, won a New York Sire Stakes division at Vernon two starts back by 9 ¼ lengths in 1:54.4. Then she broke at the start of the $191,500 Moni Maker Final at the Meadowlands at 3-1. Her task in the Zweig was made more challenging because she had the seven post. Check Me Out, part of one of two four-horse entries in the field, left from the two post. Brian Sears sent Win Missy B hard to the lead, which she made in an amazing opening quarter in :25.4. But Sears got away with :29.3 second-quarter breather, hitting the half in :55.2. Tetrick had allowed Check Me Out to settle in fifth, and when he asked her to move up first over past the half, she responded. Still, Win Missy B was two lengths clear after three quarters in 1:23.3. But Check Me Out just kept coming on the outside. Win Missy B tried holding her off but couldn’t, and had to settle for second. Cowgirl Hall, trained by Gates Brunet and driven by Jim Morrill, Jr., got up for third. Check Me Out’s 1:51.3 victory was three-fifths of a second faster than Hambletonian winner Market Share’s track and stakes record two-length victory in the $350,000 Zweig Memorial Colt and Gelding Trot two races later. New York-breds Archangel and Coraggioso had the misfortune of drawing the two outside posts in the field of nine and it cost them dearly. Both left. After Beer Summit made the front from post four in a :26.1 first quarter, Archangel, who won the Yonkers Trot earlier this year for trainer and co-owner Peter Arrigenna, made it to the front with Morrill in the bike. But Coraggioso, who has new connections - trainer Gates Brunet and driver Brian Sears - had no choice but to keep going, finally reaching the top before the half in :55.4. Magic Tonight, a 45-1 longshot driven by Ron Pierce, attacked first over, while Tetrick, driving Market Share, followed to get a perfect second-over trip with the 3-5 favorite. Coraggioso lasted on the front end through the three-quarters in 1:25 before tiring to finish eighth. Archangel, who had eight wins and two seconds in 11 prior starts this year, finished sixth. After Magic Tonight cleared the lead, Market Share roared past to give Tetrick a Zweig double on the day. “All I wanted was for him to win a race after the Hambletonian,” Market Share’s trainer Linda Toscano said. “And he did.” Tetrick said, “He just keeps getting better.” -Edited press release (Courtesy of Bill Heller, Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund)
