While most of the top 3-year-old pacers in the sport will be competing in stakes races this weekend, perhaps the “top dog” will be watching from the sidelines. Captaintreacherous has elected to bypass the Somebeachsomewhere stakes at Mohawk Racetrack to focus on the major races down the road. The hope was to get Captaintreacherous an easy mile at the Meadowlands on Saturday in a 3-year-old Open. But that race did not fill (only Captain entered) and instead the Tony Alagna trainee will go a training mile behind the gate on Saturday morning to prepare for the North America Cup eliminations the following weekend. [DRF HARNESS: Sign Up for the FREE DRF Harness Newsletter Today!] According to co-owner Myron Bell, the decision to skip the Somebeachsomewhere was done to manage the horse properly and keep him from racing too many weeks in a row. “We couldn’t have been any happier,” said Bell on Captain’s first start in a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes race on May 19. “He is very fit. We are not worried about any other colt; just about him.” Captaintreacherous won 8 of 10 starts as a 2-year-old and is widely considered the leading contender to win the $1,000,000 North America Cup. His main competition could be Odds On Equuleus, who is expected to race on Saturday in the Somebeachsomewhere.
