Happy Ticket heads Louisiana's best of 2006

Happy Ticket, who retired in November as the all-time richest Louisiana-bred with earnings of $1,668,838, is chief among the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association's horses of the year for 2006, which were elected by members of the organization.

Happy Ticket was voted champion older filly or mare in the results announced Tuesday.

Other division winners were Tortuga Straits, 2-year-old; Princess Deelite, 2-year-old filly; Costa Rising, 3-year-old; Grand Facile,

3-year-old filly; Meteor Impact, older male; and Tortuga Band, broodmare of the year.

Costa Rising won eight races in 2006, among them the Louisiana Breeders' Derby.

The stallion of the year is Leestown, who won the honor because the earnings of his Louisiana-bred progeny topped all stallions in that category in 2006. He had progeny earnings of $2,218,920.

Foxwood Plantation was named breeder of the year for the fifth straight year, a honor based on the amount of breeder awards earned in a calendar year.
