Hallowed Dreams retired

Hallowed Dreams, the Louisiana-bred filly who won the first 16 races of her career to tie the modern mark for consecutive wins held by Citation, Cigar and Mister Frisky, has been retired from racing due to an unspecified injury to her right front ankle, according to her co-owner and trainer Lloyd Romero.

Overall, she won 25 of 30 career starts and earned $740,143.

Romero said Hallowed Dreams, who is 5, came out of a routine gallop late last month favoring her right ankle. She underwent a series of physical examinations, including multiple X-rays to her knee, ankle and foot, but no diagnosis was made.

"There are no fractures, but we don't know what the problem is," said Romero. "We can't find any problem. She stands on the leg perfect. When she walks, she favors it."

Hallowed Dreams is residing on Romero's farm, a 125-acre facility in Erath, La. He said if she were to heal completely in a short period of time, there is an outside chance she could return to the races.

"But I don't think [a comeback] is going to happen," said Romero, who co-owns the mare with Johnny Gaspard.

Since she has been retired, Hallowed Dreams has adapted well to her new surroundings. "She's living the life of Reilly," said Romero.

Hallowed Dreams debuted as a 2-year-old on May 20, 1999 and won the first 16 races of her career - all in Louisiana. In addition to topping champion Personal Ensign's record of 13 straight wins by an undefeated horse, she tied the mark for consecutive wins held by Citation, Cigar and Mister Frisky.

In her bid for a 17th straight win, she suffered her first career defeat, finishing third in the $35,000 Millennium Stakes at her homebase of Evangeline Downs on Aug. 12, 2000.

She rebounded from the loss by winning her next seven races, and during that period traveled outside of Louisiana for the first time and won two stakes at Lone Star Park near Dallas.

"It was thrilling to pick up those 16 races," said Romero. "She never failed us. She's been good for the industry. Everywhere she went, she filled up the stands."

Romero said in addition to the win streak, the track records Hallowed Dreams set winning the Victoria Lass Handicap at Fair Grounds - when she lowered the mark set for six furlongs held by her sire Malagra - and the D.S. "Shine" Young Futurity at Evangeline Downs, as career highlights for Hallowed Dreams.

She last raced May 27, 2002, and finished third in the $100,000 Valid Expectations at Lone Star.

Hallowed Dreams was preparing for the track's $75,000 Miller Lite Stakes in late June when she was injured. She finished out of the money just once in her illustrious career, and next season could be bred to Unbridled's Song, but no contracts have been made, said Romero.

Hallowed Dreams also earned a free breeding to Valid Expectations when she won a stakes named for the stallion in 2001. She was bred by Mike Kennington, and is out of the mare Pacific's Dream.
