Haberlan recovering after heart attack


State steward Jim Haberlan suffered a heart attack after the races last Saturday and will likely be excused from his duties for the remainder of the Nebraska season, which runs through Sept. 13.

Haberlan was admitted to Columbus Community Hospital following the races that night and was transported by helicopter to a Lincoln facility the following day. He had two stents implanted and was scheduled to be released on Friday. Former steward Quient Schaffer is filling in for Haberlan in the interim.

o Tickets for the Nebraska Racing Hall of Fame dinner dance on Aug. 17 are available from the Nebraska Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association at Columbus or can be obtained through the HBPA office in Omaha, with reservations due by Friday. Among the honorees this year will be Nebraska native Randy Meier, who has enjoyed a long and successful career riding on the Chicago racing circuit.

o Jockey Mike Ziegler is expected to return to the Nebraska circuit next weekend following the conclusion of Arapahoe Park's season in Colorado. Ziegler is second in the standings there with 31 wins.- Bill Hodtwalker
