Guns on the Table may not get to run

EmailPOMONA, Calif. - Even though Guns on the Table is the best horse in the $150,000 Barretts Juvenile on Sunday at Fairplex Park, horseplayers might not be able to wager on the 2-year-old colt in the 6 1/2-furlong race.

Only 10 will run in the Barretts, but 12 entered. The order of priority is stakes winners, followed by winners, followed by horses that are stakes-placed. Maidens are ranked in preference by money won, which leaves Guns on the Table as the potential odd man out. He needs at least one scratch to get into the race.

Four maidens entered the Barretts, which is restricted to 2-year-olds offered for sale at a Barretts auction. Guns on the Table is third on the maiden earnings list with $7,420. The untimely shortfall is due to a brutal trip Guns on the Table endured in his most recent start Aug. 25 at Del Mar.

A $350,000 Carson City colt trained by Bob Baffert, Guns on the Table reared as the gates opened and spotted the field at least 10 lengths. After the tardy break, he made an extended run, rallied five wide, then flattened out and missed by three-quarters of a length. It was a huge effort by a promising colt.

If he draws in Sunday, Guns on the Table and jockey Tyler Baze may go favored, although Topper Shopper is the most accomplished horse in the field. Doug O'Neill trains Topper Shopper, who followed an impressive maiden win with a wire-to-wire victory Sept. 3 in the I'm Smokin Stakes for California-breds.

Topper Shopper is sired by Old Topper, whose offspring ran super on Polytrack at Del Mar this summer. But Old Toppers also run well on the Fairplex dirt, as the filly No Means Maybe showed Thursday when she won the Bustles and Bows Stakes.

Nene won his debut June 21 at Hollywood Park, ran poorly Julyo25 in the Graduation Stakes but has worked well for his comeback for trainer Ted H. West.

Good Direction won a $100,000 maiden-claiming race last time out with a 61 Beyer Figure that is far less than the 78 Beyer earned by Guns on the Table, or the 77 and 82 that Topper Shopper earned his last two starts. Scratches for the Barretts will be announced Sunday, so Guns on the Table will remain on the program.

Other starters include Gone Grand, Oneanwin, Bond, Bradford Falls, Gold No Silver, High Intellect, Wise Mandate, and Nativity Prep.
