Gulfstream: Two-year-old filly Ullapool sharp in work

Ullapool won her maiden race at Belmont Park.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Ullapool, a 2-year-old filly owned by John Fort's Peachtree Stable, turned in the work of the morning here Thursday, going six furlongs in 1:14.24 for trainer Wesley Ward, with the last five-eighths in 59 seconds and change. Ullapool has captured 1 of her 3 starts, with the win coming in a maiden dash early this summer at Belmont Park.

Ward had originally considered supplementing Ullapool to last Saturday's Spectacular Bid Stakes against males but ultimately passed on that idea. He is now considering either a 6 1/2-furlong allowance race or the Grade 3 Old Hat on New Year's Day.

"She's working like a bomb," Ward said on Thursday. "I'll talk it over with Mr. Fort before deciding where to go, but he's also got a very good 2-year-old filly with Wayne Catalano, Sacristy, eligible for the same races and naturally we're going to keep them apart. I think my filly probably wants to go further than six furlongs, so we might wind up in the allowance race and Wayne's horse in the Old Hat."

Ward also had Final Mesa, winner of the 2011 Old Hat, nominated to Saturday's Sugar Swirl but did not enter her in the Grade 3 dash.

"She's got to step her works up a little more before I can run her in a spot like the Sugar Swirl," said Ward. "She's doesn't put a lot into her works in general, so I'll breeze her from the gate this weekend and see if that wakes her up a bit."
