Gulfstream Park: Will Take Charge among 22 Donn nominations

Will Take Charge will van from Oaklawn to Gulfstream, and is expected to arrive on Tuesday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Nominations were released Wednesday for the Grade 1 Donn Handicap, Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap, and the three other stakes races here on the weekend of Feb. 8 and 9.

The Donn, to be run Sunday, Feb. 9, closed with 22 nominations, led by Eclipse Award winner Will Take Charge, who will van here from Oaklawn Park and is scheduled to arrive on the grounds next Tuesday. His chief competition figures to include River Seven, Lea, and Revolutionary.

Wayne Lukas, who traines Will Take Cahrge, said, “I haven’t seen the weights yet and I’m not sure who else is running, but it’s the first Grade 1 race of the year, so I thought we’d take advantage of it.”

Weights for the Donn will be released Saturday.

Ninteen were nominated for the Gulfstream Park Turf, which, like the Donn, has been moved from Feb. 8 to Feb. 9. Summer Front and Tetradrachm, first and second in the Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale here earlier this month, are among the leading candidates for the Gulfstream Park Turf, along with Amira’s Prince, Joha, and Boisterous.

◗ Even without No Nay Never, Ward will be represented in the Hutcheson by Pablo Del Monte, who exits a fourth-place finish in the Gulfstream Park Derby. The remainder of the lineup comprises the Todd Pletcher-trained pair of Trail Blaze and Vinceramos, Gambler’s Ghost, Long On Value, Mighty Brown, Spot, Tashir, Wildcat Red, and C Zee.
