Gulfstream Park: Track, horsemen sign purse contract

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Gulfstream Park and the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association signed new purse and slots contracts on Monday. The terms of the slots contract will help provide a strong basis for Gulfstream’s planned expansion of its casino, which in turn will result in more money to be earmarked for purses, according to horsemen and track officials.

“We genuinely appreciate Gulfstream’s efforts in working with us on a document which greatly benefits the horsemen and the track,” said Phil Combest, president of the horsemen’s group. “Both the quality of racing and purse levels will remain high as a result of this agreement.”

One of the terms of the agreement is that Gulfstream will contribute to the cost of the $10 per day stall rent being charged to Calder horsemen this winter and next.

It would appear that depending on slots to support Racing has inherent long term problems. In some states (possibly New Jersey) they may want to use slot revenue for other purposes - school lunch programs etc. Then you have a real debate that may be hard to win.

So, are these monies earmarked and for what? If not, then this just looks like a slush fund.

Gulfstream purses are a joke. You can run 2nd there and lose money for the month. The Florida purse bonus helps of course but that is part 2 of how Gulfstream/Florida racing should hide their heads in the sand. I ran & won a $10000 NW3L claimer there from the posted $17500 purse ONLY if your a Florida Bred my gross was $8400. trainer gets 13% + monthly training fees, jockey gets 10 % . You do the math. Then I run in Charlestown WV where they have lowered the purses I am lucky enough to win that race too and a$5000 NW3L winners share is $7800.
