Gulfstream Park: Onlyforyou easily handles two-turn task in Davona Dale

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Onlyforyou successfully stretched out around two turns and ran her record to 4 for 4 with a front-running victory on Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the Grade 2, $200,000 Davona Dale Stakes, a major prep for both the Gulfstream Park Oaks next month and the Kentucky Oaks on May 2.

Onlyforyou is nominated not only to the Oaks but is one of the fillies nominated to the Triple Crown, but trainer Todd Pletcher said there were no plans to try the boys in the immediate future.

The track favored speed all day, and that benefited Onlyforyou, who used her natural speed and good draw – post 3 – to secure the lead with the short run to the first turn in 1 1/16-mile races here.

“She’s got natural speed and we don’t want to take that away from her,” Pletcher said. “Luckily she broke well after misbehaving in the gate a little bit and was able to get to the position we wanted.”

Onlyforyou ($4.20), the favorite, received a bold challenge from House Rules going into  the far turn, but Onlyforyou turned her back and went on to win by 2 1/4 lengths. House Rules held second by a half-length over Aurelia’s Belle. Penwith was fourth, 11 1/4 lengths farther back.

Onlyforyou set fractions of 24.12 seconds, 47.23, and 1:11.27 en route to a final time of 1:43.71 on the fast main track. All three of her previous races had been in sprints, including the seven-furlong Forward Gal last time out Jan. 25.

“It looked like she handled a mile and a sixteenth today,” Pletcher said. “After she got by the wire she kind of pricked her ears a little bit like there might still be something left. Having already won here three times now, it’d be hard to think about taking her anywhere else.”

The win was the fourth of the day for Pletcher, and the fifth of six for jockey Javier Castellano, through the first 10 races on a 12-race card.

“I had a beautiful trip,” Castellano said. “She really flew out of the gate. My only concern was two turns and she responded today.”

Pletcher also ran Stopchargingmaria, who wound up fifth after being forced four paths wide around the first turn after starting from the outside post in the field of eight. It was her first start since Nov. 30.

“She was very wide on the first turn, and coming off a layoff,” Pletcher said.

Onlyforyou, a daughter of Malibu Moon, is owned by Glencrest Farm.
