Gulfstream Park: McGaughey weighs Fountain of Youth for Orb's next

Orb overcame an eventful trip to register a one-length allowance win going 1 1/8 miles in January.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Shug McGaughey remains undecided as to whether he'll bring his top 3-year-old prospect, Orb, back in the Grade 1 Fountain of Youth. Orb, who overcame an eventful trip to register a one-length allowance win going 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park last month, worked for the second time since that outing Monday at Payson Park.

"I thought Orb really worked well this morning, and we'll take a long look at the Fountain of Youth, although nothing is definite yet," McGaughey said Monday. "But we are really lacking too many other options for him at this point."

The horse reminds me of Real Quiet, it took RQ 7 races to break his maiden but along they knew he would get better as the distances got furher. Orb has the same closing style and will be suited for the Derby. The problem is getting him there and racking up enough points. This horse will love a 1 1/4 and all of these horses running away in these preps wire to wire will not be around the first Sat. in May!

I like Shug but I wouldn't touch this horse. This horse ain't Easy Goer. His comments says it all " "But we are really lacking too many other options for him at this point". Why would anyone bet this horse?

He's run against the best and beat a beast. He has been overlooked all along but not so when he wins the FOY! Shug knows what he is doing here.

The Beyer's seem low but his Nov win was over Revolutionary who is highly thought of. One has to consider him. I find it most interesting that Shug looks at the FoY and sez, "...we are really lacking too many other options for him at this point." Can, "the points, the points, my kingdom for some Derby points", be far behind?

Orb is going to end up being a Turf horse, mark my words, he'll be running in the Secretariat this summer.

I'll bet him wherever he runs next out. You have one of the BEST trainers of all time taking care of him , picking the right spot and Shug is as hot as any trainer in the business. Good luck and keep on winning Shug !! Bob D.
