Gulfstream Park: Magoo pulled up during drill

Trainer Wesley Ward was unsure what the prognosis was going to be for his speedster Magoo, who had to be pulled up less than an eighth of a mile into his scheduled half-mile work here Friday.

“There doesn’t appear to be any fractures,” Ward said back at the barn after Magoo underwent an examination by the veterinarian. “It’s really hard to tell at this point just what the issue is, but luckily the rider got him pulled up very quickly, which may have averted anything too serious.”

Magoo, a son of Bring the Heat, has won 2 of 6 starts. He finished third as the 4-5 favorite under allowance conditions here Near Year’s Day.

“He’s a monster,” Ward said. “He was just going to have an easy work today. He’s a California-bred, and I was thinking of sending him out there to run down the hill at Santa Anita in the Sensational Star Stakes.”

◗ Jockey Alex Solis took off all his mounts Friday, but was hoping to return Saturday after being kicked in the thigh in the walking ring prior to Thursday’s last race. Solis was scheduled to ride first-time starter Lady Lizzy for trainer Lisa Lewis when the incident occurred. Daniel Centeno replaced Solis aboard Lady Lizzy who finished a late-running fourth in her debut.
