Gulfstream Park: Brown in no rush for Awesome Feather-Havre de Grace matchup

Awesome Feather scores a 5 3/4-length victory in Saturday’s Florida Sunshine Millions Distaff.

Led by reigning Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, there is plenty of depth in the older filly and mare division this year.

Awesome Feather put herself among the upper echelon of that group with a 5 3/4-length victory in Saturday’s Florida Sunshine Millions Distaff that kept her undefeated in nine career starts.

Trainer Chad Brown isn’t sure where Awesome Feather – the champion 2-year-old filly of 2010 – will make her next start, but appeared to be leaning more toward the Rampart here March 31 than the Sabin on Feb. 25.

At some point, Awesome Feather is likely to run against the likes of Royal Delta, last year’s 3-year-old filly champion and the multiple Grade 1 winner It’s Tricky as well as Havre de Grace and Awesome Maria, another 5-year-old who went 4 for 4 last year before getting injured.

“I haven’t really thought about it, to be honest with you,” Brown said Monday morning at Palm Meadows. “Obviously, Havre de Grace isn’t a horse you’d be looking to take on anytime soon. In her next race, I’d be looking at the right distance, a surface that I’m comfortable with, make sure she’s doing good. But any horses of her crop, I wouldn’t be looking to avoid any of them.”

Brown said Awesome Feather came out of her race in good order.
