Next Saturday’s Grade 3 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park appears to be shaping up as a wide-open race, especially with Bahamian Squall, impressive winner of the Sunshine State Stakes here earlier this month, passing the spot to await the Sunshine Millions Sprint on Jan. 19.
Among the half dozen or so speedsters expected to start is Action Andy, upset winner of the Frank De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel on Oct. 27 and currently in the midst of a three-race winning streak. Action Andy is stabled with trainer Carlos Garcia at Tampa Bay Downs, where he won the Pelican Stakes on Dec. 8.
Among those who could challenge Action Andy in the six-furlong Mr. Prospector are Indiano, runner-up in the Pelican; Bull Dozer, claimed by trainer Mike Maker for $62,500 out of a winning effort here, and the lightly raced but promising Dreaming of Neno. Other potential starters include Partyallnightlong, Little Drama, Close It Out, and Artefacto.
Bull Dozer and Dreaming of Neno both worked here Saturday. Bull Dozer breezed an easy five furlongs in 1:02.65 while Dreaming of Neno went a similarly effortless half-mile in 50.37 seconds.
Saturday’s local tab also included Mucho Macho Man, an easy three-eighths in 36.78, and trainer Dale Romans’s 2-year-old prospects Dewey Square (five furlongs in 1:00.87) and Gulfport (1:00.08).
Fund-raiser prelude to Eclipse
Gulfstream Park has announced it will host Celebration of the Thoroughbred, a cocktail party on the evening of Jan. 18 in honor of the Eclipse Awards. The event will be highlighted by live and silent auctions featuring among other items, the art of Daily Racing Form ’s award winning photographer Barbara Livingston.
The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. in the walking ring with all proceeds from the auctions going to the Gulfstream Park Thoroughbred Aftercare Program Inc.
Best Bets
ONE NINE NINE raced quite wide en route to a commendable second behind future stakes winner Man Stuff the only time she saw action last spring. She wintered at Payson Park before working four times here on the Poly, and should be ready to rumble with Da Silva riding for a live barn. GLORIOUS ANGEL ran against a speed bias when fifth in an April 21 maiden special. Trainer Mark Casse hit with 20% of his second-out droppers to maiden-claiming company over the past five years ($1.50 ROI). MORNING HAS BROKEN was a chalky second vs.
