HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Rahy’s Attorney, a Grade 1 winner at a mile in his younger days, showed there’s still plenty left in the tank at the age of 7 when he stretched out to 1 1/2 miles for the first time to capture Saturday’s $150,000 Pan American at Gulfstream Park.
Under a beautifully judged ride by jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, Rahy’s Attorney parlayed a stalking trip into a .three-quarter-length victory over the 9-year-old Musketier to add the Grade 3 Pan Am to an impressive resume, highlighted by his 1 ¼-length victory over Ventura in the 2008 Woodbine Mile. Rahy’s Attorney, a 7-year-old son of Crown Attorney, paid $12.60 after completing the distance in 2:25.85 over a firm course.
Rahy’s Attorney, who was beaten less than a length by Prince Will I Am when second in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida here earlier this meet, stalked the pace of longshot Beckham Bend from the outset of the Pan Am. Rahy’s Attorney gained a short advantage near the quarter pole, edged clear in early stretch, then dug in resolutely to hold safe Musketier. Musketier, also a Grade 1 winner, sat a perfect trip just off the leaders while saving ground, eased out into the stretch, and was gaining gradually at the end.
Prince Will I Am raced a bit farther back than expected and rallied belatedly to finish third as the even-money favorite.
“I figured that one horse was in there to keep it honest so I told Emma to sit off him and try to get first run turning for home,” said trainer Ian Black. “He won a Grade 1 going a mile earlier in his career but I thought this year I would try to stretch him out a little bit because it might be easier on him. This was his first stakes win outside of Canada but he’s been four times second in graded stakes in the U.S. He’s just super consistent.”
Wilson, who won a race earlier on the card, picked up the mount on Rahy’s Attorney from Edgar Prado who was at the Fair Grounds on Saturday.
Best Bets
UNCLE HARRY caught the eye with a solid late run in his local debut last time, just missing despite racing well back early in a race which featured a gate-to-wire winner; he was 2nd two back in his first try on the grass after setting the early pace, and the fact that he's versatile enough to lead or rate gives him added appeal in the finale. EDGE OF GLORY comes out of the same race as the top pick and he was in fact a half-length in front of that rival on the wire, gradually closing on the winner through the lane; certainly deserves a long look off that running line.
