Gulfstream: Dayatthespa gets up by neck in Herecomesthebride

The 3-year-old filly Dayatthespa, ridden by Javier Castellano, wins her second stakes of the Gulfstream meet in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -   Dayatthespa was a little reluctant to load into the starting gate but certainly wasn’t reluctant to run once she finally got under way in Sunday’s $150,000 Herecomesthebride Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Dayatthespa posted her second stakes win of the meet and first graded stakes winner of her career when she rallied to a hard-fought neck victory over Regalo Mia in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride for 3-year-old fillies.

Dayatthespa, a New York bred daughter of City Zip, rallied from far back to win her 3-year-old debut six weeks ago in the Sweetest Chant Stakes. But she was right up with the pace after breaking alertly under jockey Javier Castellano at the start of the 1 1/8-mile Herecomesthebride.  Dayatthespa stalked very reasonable fractions set by Frolic’s Revenge, readily took the lead entering the stretch, quickly moved well clear, but had to be fully extended to fend off Regalo Mia’s final surge.

Regalo Mia, a lightly raced but steadily improving filly, saved ground while advancing around the second turn, eased out for the drive, and was getting to the winner at the end.  Almusafa finished another 3 1/4 lengths farther back in third but was disqualified and placed sixth for impeding Northern Passion in early stretch, elevating Dixie Strike to third.

Adayatthespa paid $3.80 after completing nine furlongs in 1:47.30 over the firm turf.

“I thought it was a great effort and a perfect ride by Javier,” said trainer Chad Brown by phone from Ocala. “She broke better this time and he put her where she’s comfortable.  She’s never had any prior history being reluctant to load like that but as a trainer you’re always a little concerned they might be exerting energy just prior to breaking. But once she got in the gate, I forgot all about it. I’ll talk to Javier and we’ll do a little gate schooling with her if we have to before her next start.”

Brown said Dayatthespa could return in the Grade 1 Ashland over the synthetic surface at Keeneland on April 7.
