Gulfstream cancels due to track conditions

Racing was canceled at Gulfstream Park by the track stewards following the first race on Monday after the jockeys unanimously agreed the racetrack was unsafe. Heavy rain fell over the area Sunday night and the track condition was listed as sloppy for Monday's opener.

They riders "agreed to try it but said the further they went into the race the worse it got," said Larry Saumell, the East Coast regional manager for the Guild. "That there was just no cushion left at all and they were pretty much riding on the base itself. So for the safety of both the riders and the horses the decision was unanimous not to continue the card."

"The riders expressed their concerns and we acted in response to those concerns," said Gulfstream Park's president and general manager, Bill Murphy.

Gulfstream had a regularly scheduled dark day on Tuesday and was expected to reopen on Wednesday. There will be a pick six carryover of $137,919 when racing resumes on Wednesday.- Mike Welsch
