Gulfstream: Cajun Beat rebounds

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Cajun Beat, coming off a last-place finish in the Grade 2 Hutcheson, defeated 4-5 favorite Get Smarter in the $75,000 Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.

Cajun Beat encountered early trouble and stopped to a walk in the Hutcheson. In the seven-furlong Hallandale Beach, the competition was much softer and the trip less taxing.

Jockey Gary Boulanger allowed Cajun Beat to settle several lengths off the pace, and they had to steady briefly awaiting racing room on the far turn. Cajun Beat swung wide for racing room into the stretch and wore down Get Smarter in the final strides. Get Smarter, making his stakes debut, had inherited the lead from the tiring Jack Black and Ice and Formal Charade near the quarter pole.

Formal Charade finished third, 8 1/4 lengths behind Get Smarter. Lex Luthier, Springfield Boy, and Jack Black and Ice rounded out the order of finish.

Cajun Beat, who wore blinkers for the first time in the Hallandale Beach, paid $4.60 after covering seven furlongs in 1:22.61 over a fast track. Cajun Beat is trained by Cam Gambolati for Satish Sanan and John and Joseph Iracane.

At Keeneland, Scrimshaw became the second horse in five minutes to come out of the Hutcheson and win a stakes, winning the Coolmore Lexington at Keeneland. Scrimshaw had finished fourth behind Lion Tamer in the Hutcheson.
