Griffin named race-caller at Gulfstream Park West

Chris Griffin, who is calling races on the Northern California fair circuit, has been named the caller for the two-month fall meet that starts Oct. 5 at Gulfstream Park West in north Miami, Fla.

For the last five years, Griffin had served as the master of ceremonies, public address announcer and play-by-play announcer for the Harlem Globetrotters.

"I am blessed to have the opportunity to announce the sport which I grew up on and love," Griffin, an Illinois resident who grew up in California, said in a media release. "My goal is to provide accurate, energetic race calls that please the fans ontrack and those watching at home and at simulcast sites. I would like to thank Gulfstream Park West and The Stronach Group. I'm living my dream, and I hope the fans will hear that in my voice. I can't wait."

Gulfstream West, formerly known as Calder, is in the process of a major overhaul. Pete Aiello calls the other 10 months of the year at Gulfstream, located eight miles east in Hallandale Beach.

I think Gulfstream made a great choice.  I raised my son on racing even though he was a great performer in different sports. He went with me to Santa Anita Park, Hollywood Park, Del Mar from the time he was born.  I would take him to The LA County Fair and after he rode an elephant, we would get in the stands to catch the first race.  We talked all the greats in the sport.  He got to meet most of that wonderful Jockey Colony in California- Laffit, Chris McCarran, Eddie D,, Gary S., The Shoe, Fernando Toro, Ray Sibille, Terry Lipham and my favorite watching him at Oaklawn, Sandy Hawley. He will bring the joy that he has known all his life.  Good luck son.  dad
