Great Lakes track report

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Clever Moon and Charlies Indian, the one-two finishers in the July 16 Moonbeam Handicap, face five Michigan-bred fillies and mares in the $50,000-guaranteed Farer Belle Lee Handicap at Great Lakes Downs on Friday evening. Tank Grrrl, the 2003 winner of this 1 1/16-mile fixture, is back to defend his title in the race's 17th running.

Trained by Ronnie Allen, Charlies Indian was made the 118-pound highweight and will be ridden by Freddie Mata. Charlies Indian is 3-2-1 in six starts this meet, including the Larkspur Handicap.

Clever Moon, last year's Sire Stakes winner as a 3-year-old, was claimed for $18,000 at Arlington Park by trainer Ron Gorham for his partners Ron Bieke and Henry Mast. Clever Moon responded by winning the Moonbeam in her next trip under silks. Leading rider T.D. Houghton will ride Clever Moon at 117 pounds.

* "Look in the cup!" That's what trainer Dave Kueffner heard when he was roaming the back of the par-three green looking for his lost golf ball. The two players in front of him had watched his ball bounce into the hole, which was not visible from the tee.

Kueffner, a casual golfer, kept the luck flowing a couple of days later, when he saddled Per Curiam ($14.40) for a 4 1/2-length win in the $45,000 Little Ones Stakes here last Saturday. Jorge Rivera was aboard the winner.
