Great Lakes rider injured

EmailJockey Jorge Collazo Jr. suffered a bruised lung in a spill Wednesday night at Great Lakes Downs, according to his agent, Ronny Salmen. The final race of the Wednesday card was canceled after a delay of approximately a half-hour spent stabilizing Collazo before transporting him to the hospital.

Salmen said that Collazo was put on a ventilator to assist his breathing at the hospital. The ventilator was removed Thursday morning.

Collazo was aboard Afleets Diva when his saddle slipped at the start of the race. He struggled to stay atop the filly for three-sixteenths of a mile before falling and being stepped on by his mount. He rose to his feet after the spill and staggered to the outside rail.

While waiting for an ambulance to arrive to transport Collazo to the hospital, the jockeys voted to not ride the final race out of concern for for Collazo's conditions, according to jockey Nate Alcala.

Collazo is one of three Great Lakes jockeys currently injured. Anthony Dailey suffered a facial fracture when he was kicked late last month while attempting to mount in the paddock. Lori Coburn is awaiting release from the hospital after breaking a leg Monday evening.
