Great Lakes: Jackson enters three fillies

Email

Fiji Island, winner of the Temptress Stakes on Sept. 3, is one of three 2-year-old fillies entered by trainer James Jackson in the $50,000 Sickle's Image Stakes at Great Lakes Downs.

The six-furlong Sickle's Image, in its 29th running, drew eight Michigan-bred fillies who will each carry 119 pounds.

Fiji Island, who started her career at Keeneland, has had little trouble winning at Great Lakes. She captured the Temptress by two lengths without fully extending herself. She will be ridden by Luis Martinez.

Jackson has also entered Money Code and Summer Cyclone. Money Code won handily by six lengths in her career debut on July 19. Mary Doser gets the mount on Money Code, while Julie Veltman will ride the maiden Summer Cyclone.

Trainer Bob Gorham entered Rockem S'More and Easy Ellie. Rockem S'More, a full sister to 2004 Michigan horse of the year Rockem Sockem, was third in the Temptress, beaten 11 lengths, in her first start. Easy Ellie won her maiden by five lengths last month.

* Trainer Shane Spiess, 48, saddled a pair of winners Wednesday night to reach the 1,000-win milestone in his career.

Spiess won the fourth race with Shanty Hill Road ($5.80) before reaching the mark with Barken ($5) in the seventh race.

Spiess was a regular at Detroit Race Course before the 1999 opening of Great Lakes Downs, where he won the inaugural training championship. He is currently in fifth place in the trainer standings with 31 wins.
