Great Lakes: Ernie Cat looks best

Email

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Ernie Cat tops a field of 10 2-year-old Michigan-bred colts and geldings in the $45,000 Little Ones Stakes at Great Lakes Downs. The Little Ones is the first juvenile stakes of the season in Michigan for colts and geldings, and will be the first attempt at six furlongs for all of the starters.

Ernie Cat, owned and bred by Phyllis and Gene Gilmore, is one of two runners entered by leading trainer Gerald Bennett. By Tale of the Cat, Ernie Cat has made one career start, an easy win at four furlongs on Aug 3. Terry Houghton has a return ride on the morning-line favorite from post 3.

Bennett also will saddle Demagoguery, who will run uncoupled in the betting with Ernie Cat.

Demagoguery, who drew post 8, was second in his debut before winning his maiden on Aug. 1 with Houghton. Freddie Mata will ride the Demaloot Demashoot gelding Saturday.
