Great Lakes Downs track report

Terry Houghton rode six winners Tuesday evening to raise his total to 13 victories through six days of racing at Great Lakes Downs. Houghton, the track's leading rider last year and the winningest rider in the seven-year history of the western Michigan bullring, teamed up with trainer Gerald Bennett for four of the six wins.

Houghton and Bennett won the first with Beauty Pageant ($6) and the third with Zany Northwestern ($2.80). Both are owned by Mary Bennett, wife of the trainer. They then took the fourth with Storm in My Heart ($4) and the nightcap with Western Skier ($3.80). Houghton was aboard Major Alliance ($19.80) in the fifth for trainer Bob Gorham and also booted home Title Shot ($3.60) for John Grace in the eighth.

Houghton is riding at a 27 percent winning clip, while Bennett, last year's training champion, has saddled 8 winners from 20 starters, good for 40 percent.

* Mary Doser tallied two wins before being injured on May 17, the second day of racing here. The 1999 leading jockey and runner-up to Houghton last year, Doser suffered a partial separation of her shoulder in a spill. She will be out of the saddle until the end of June, said her agent, Ronnie Salmen.

Salmen's other rider, Jorge Collazo Jr., broke three bones in his face when he was unseated leaving the starting gate last Saturday. He will have surgery Friday and be out of action for a month, Salmen said.
